When starting the development process for the branding of our app, Project Viz, we began by collecting together a bunch of logos to draw inspiration from. This selection included familiar logos such as Photoshop (and other Adobe products) and the PayPal logo. One of our mood boards can be found below. figure 1
After collecting all of our reference images, we began to throw some quick ideas together, taking inspiration from each and every image that we found useful. We’d already decided from the start that we wanted to include the initials of the app in some way, but we also wanted the logo to be easily recognised and hopefully represent what the app actually does. We tried to construct a 3D logo but it did not seem to accomplish what we wanted it to. We tried combining our own brand with the app’s brand, but this did not translate very well either. Below is a selection of our original sketches figure 2
After more experimentation, we concluded that we wanted the branding to be spherical, as it would be the easiest way to represent the app without including 3D graphics. We still had to decide on the typeface, so began testing out different colours and typefaces. figure 3
By sheer luck, while doodling and erasing, we came up with our final logo. After discovering the initial shape and typeface, we needed to refine it so that it was not just a flat image. We also had not yet decided on the colours we should use, so we went back to colour testing and tweaking figure 4
As we progressed further through development process we finally landed on something we all liked - the colour, typeface and layout of the logo below is finalized and polished. figure 5
Now that the branding was complete, we then needed to animate a splash screen to be implemented into the app itself. This was a very quick process, and after a few tests we landed on the splash screen below. figure 6
After a fairly easy process we are finally at a place where we are happy with how the branding is looking. Please let us know if you have any feedback, as we are always looking to improve!
